David Avery M.D., outlined by the yellow ellipse, takes off at the start line. Dr. Avery placed 8th in the men's division with a 20:57 (3 miles), 10th overall, and 3rd in the 50-59 age group. Thanks to the Washington State Psychiatric Association (WSPA), Ron Sterling was able to put together a very enthusiatic team for the 2nd Annual Move for Mental Health Run/Walk. It took place on September 28, 2002, at Magnuson Park, Seattle.

This was the WSPA's first participation as an association in the Run, and we are looking forward to doing an even better job of representing psychiatrists and their friends next year. To view more photos, go to the Main 2002 Mental Health Run Page. Descriptions of photos are further below.

There may have been other WSPA Members at the run, but the official count was eight team members. The largest team was 23 members (Downtown Emergency Service Center). The WSPA Team raised over $800. The most raised by a team was $1,100 by the Wild Women of Wallingford.

Short Biographies of Pictured Team Members:

    Julia Murray, M.D., President Elect, Washington State Psychiatric Association. Dr. Murray is a Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist and on the Faculty of the University of Washington. She is now providing services at the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic and other affiliated Children's Hospital clinics.

    David Avery, M.D., is Director of Inpatient Psychiatry at Harborview Medical Center and Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the University of Washington School of Medicine. He is currently doing research on transcranial magnetic stimulation as a treatment for medication-resistant and/or medication-intolerant depressed patients and is looking for patients who might qualify for the study.

    Carla Hellekson, M.D., is a psychiatrist at Valley Cities Counseling and Consultation, and has a private consulting practice.

    Jesse Fann, M.D., is an Assistant Professor and member of the Division of Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry at UWMC as well as Director of the Psychiatry and Psychology Consultation Service at the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance and Associate in Clinical Research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. His clinical work focuses on evaluation and treatment of psychiatric issues in the outpatient and inpatient medical settings. His research focuses on identifying and treating depression and cognitive impairments in the neurological and oncology settings.

    Kendra Fann is Jesse Fann's wife, and works at Coldstream Capital Management in Bellevue, Washington.

    Ron Sterling, M.D., is a general and geriatric psychiatrist who is continuing to build a fee-for-service private practice with offices in Downtown Seattle and Bellevue. He is a member of the King County Mental Health Advisory Board and Chairperson of the Quality Council of that Board.
